Hi Nick n subbers I have just compiled a video of my top 20 channels here on YouTube. Please check it out an let me know what other channels you are into. PS your channel made it into the top twenty.
If I remember correctly; Dave Johns competed in the World's Strongest Man Competition in 1979 from Universal Studios, CA. As always, great work Nick. Cheers.
HE GOT PNEUMONIA, SUPPOSEDLY FROM, " Valley Fever, a fungus in the dust/soil found in the San Juaquin, Ca. and Phoeniz, Az valleys. It grows in the lungs, causing pneumonia."
Really strong too! Often his training partner was Dave Shaw, a national champion and record holder in powerlifting in the heavy or superheavy division. No empty pumped up tissue here.
Thank you wholeheartedly for giving recognition to many African Americans that were rarely given their fair share of notoriety in a time period of social upheaval. Thanks to your family or whoever made you aware such hardships and racism.
I remember seeing Dave Johns and Clint Beyerle in the 1977 Halloween with the Adams Family TV film starring the original series cast. Johns did an impersonation of Robert DeNiro's "you talking to me?" bit from Taxi Driver. He and Beyerle played the muscle for a ring of thieves trying to rob the Addams during a Halloween costume party, Johns and Beyerle wore face masks and posing trucks as their disguise, and looked in great shape, carrying off John Astin and locking him in a spike lined coffin. Worth a look for their reaction shots when Lerch picks up their barbells like they were toothpicks. Funny. Anyone else remember seeing this flick?
Thanks for posting. I worked with Dave in 1970 – 1971 up in Saugus, CA. We worked for the WLCAC at their job training facility in Saugus. We were Counselors, and he was a wonderful guy. Sorry to hear that he has passed. Great Guy!!!!
I disagree that there was a lot of racism in bodybuilding during the 1970s. Robby Robinson, Sergio Olivia, Dave Johns, Rick Wayne, Harold Poole, Serge Nubret, Bertil Fox, Tony Pearson, Bill Grant, and Larry Jackson were not kept from winning big shows. Dave Johns also won the Ametuer NABBA Universe and came in second place twice in the NABBA Pro Universe. He would have won the Pro Universe had it not been for the great Bertil Fox. Johns was also an incredibly strong body builder for the 70s having squatted 600 lbs for reps and bench pressed 450 lbs for reps. He would sometimes eat three dozen scrambled eggs and a pound of bacon for breakfast. I saw him a few times at Bill Pearl's Gym in 1978 when he was training for the NABBA Ameteur Universe. Nice guy, but we really cannot say for sure that steroids did not contribute to his death. He did have a bad lung infection. As most of you know, steroid use lowers your immune system. It is possible his steroid use compromised his immunity, which (if true) would have led to his body being unable to fight off such a bad infection. I am not claiming this is what happened. I am only making people aware that we just do not know. I have no doubt he would have eventually won a pro show. The reason he did not win a pro show is because in the 70s and early 80s there were only four or five pro shows that one could enter after earning a pro card, which Johns earned by winning the AAU America.
I Remember Dave Johns when I a little Child..I thought He was a wrestler until I was old enough to know what he really was..His Mother was My Aunt..She Sadly Died about two years ago.. But yeah…He was One of the Best Body Builder's Ever… They Just Don't Make Them Like Him Anymore..
When i used to train at Bill Pearl's Green St Gym in Pasadena, CA in the mid 1970s, Dave was always there pounding the iron. He was a gentleman and always had a smile for everyone. Always very congenial and helpful. He trained like a machine, nonstop. We all remember him with great affection and fondness. He built a great physique with dedication and commitment to the sport. A magnificent BBer.

To continue the wrestler theme, you should do MMA. Alistair Overeem, Tyron Woodley, Yoel Romero, the aesthetics are real

He used to eat 3 dozen whole eggs a day. Seriously. AND stayed muscular when he was doing it.
